prideofaustralia™ medal 2007
17 June 2007
The annual Pride of Australia medal program launches today and needs your help to find the countless people who embody Australian values such as bravery, compassion and give selflessly to their fellow Australians with little or no recognition.
These unsung heroes could be your friend, workmate, neighbour, your child’s teacher, the local police officer or fire fighter or simply someone wo makes a difference and has made your community a better place to live.
Chairman and CEO of News Limited, John Hartigan, said that since its inception in 2005, the Pride of Australia medal has grown from strength to strength.
"The awards have generated more than 7,000 nominations across the country. We have uncovered stories about everyday Australians who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities that would have otherwise gone untold," he said.
"These remarkable people embody the best of what it means to be Australian and don’t always get the acknowledgment they deserve. Their heart-warming, courageous stories have unearthed what we always knew was there - a well of greatness at the grass roots."
"Over the coming months, we'll introduce you to some of the nominees in our newspapers across the country and give you a brief look at why they merit our praise," said Mr Hartigan.
Ten unique sterling silver Pride of Australia medals will be awarded across 10 categories that celebrate and honour values and attributes such as bravery, courage, leadership, community spirit, mateship, fair play, tolerance, hard work and generosity.
The Pride of Australia medal is a national award program that is implemented at a state and territory level. Winners will be recognised and honoured at a special ceremony event held in their relevant state and territory in October 2007.
Short listed nominations will be judged by a panel of local community leaders and senior representatives from News Limited newspapers in each state and territory and the winners will be announced in that newspaper.
The nomination period is open from Sunday, 17 June 2007 and closes at 5pm, Friday, 17 August 2007 and everyone is encouraged to make a nomination.
For more information or to make a nomination check your favourite News Limited daily or Sunday newspaper or go to www.prideofaustralia.com.au.
